Modeling a snorkel mask, Part 1

This modeling tutorial walks through the creation of the first part of a snorkel mask. It uses polygon modeling and subdivision surfaces with emphasis on the use of bridge, custom grids and guides to facilitate the joining of different topological regions.

    Beauty, Thanks Chris!

Off topic, but what Mac configuration is best suited for modeling and rendering. Multi-core, more rams? Having trouble getting fast rendering with my machine. Considering the new MacPro is coming…I just couldn’t find a topic on hardware config for StrataCX.

Well, the two have different requirements. Any moderately modern machine can model well enough, but for rendering the more cores you have the faster you’ll get from rendering. Hyper-threaded cores are even better since Design3D sees them as two distinct processors. So a hyperthreaded 8-core machine is actually seen as 16 CPU’s by D3D and the OS. Having a good GPU helps with the interactivity at the modeling level.

so you think the new mac pro basic 6core config would just be adequate?

my i7 mac book pro – Strata displays Available Cores: 8, on the app start-up screen. But its struggling when it comes to rendering. Same thing with my 7/8 yrs old Quad core MacPro.

Does adding more RAMs improve performance.

    Thanks.

RAM won’t make a huge difference unless you only have say 2 gigs of RAM which isn’t common anymore. More CPU’s is what makes the difference. A new iMac with Core i7 for instance will way outperform your old MacPro even though it’s technically 4 core. They’re faster and also hyperthreaded so they act as 8. Of course the MacPro’s with more physical cores which are also hyperthreaded will also make a big difference.
