PowerPoint Template

Use this template to create PowerPoint presentations with embedded 3D content. No plug-in required!

Instructions

  1. Download this ZIP and unpack it to a folder. It's a good idea to mark the file read-only, so you do not accidentally change it.
  2. Prepare the web tour to be embedded. Make sure all the HTML, JAR, and other files are in a single directory. Rename the starting HTML file "index.html".
  3. Open the presentation with PowerPoint, and agree to let Macros execute. Note that the instructions in this template are not for you, they are for the person you might pass this presentation along to.
  4. Go to the third slide ("3D Model"), and choose Tools > Macro > Macros... from the menu bar. Choose the Macro Slide3.AttachFilesToSlide and browse to the directory where your web tour is stored.
  5. Select all the files used by your web tour.

That's it! When you view the presentation in Slide Show mode, your web presentation will be embedded on the slide.

Tips

To have your model fill the whole viewing area, change the HTML to use width=100% height=99% instead of fixed pixel amounts for applet size. Note that using 99% height ensures no unwanted scrollbars appear.

PowerPoint has a bug which prevents embedded web content from showing up the first time you view a slide. If you move your mouse over the Unpack Files button at bottom of the page, it will force PowerPoint to start showing the embedded content.

The files are attached to the slide, allowing you to send someone the .PPT file alone, and be sure all the content is included. PowerPoint is not very efficient at storing embedded data, so compressing the .PPT file with ZIP will often have a considerable size impact.

The other Macros listed in the Macros... menu allow you to review the files attached to a slide, and clear the files from a slide to start over. Each time you attach files, they will be added to the ones already attached (unless the names are the same, in which case they will replace the existing files).

To create a presentation with multiple web tours in it, create separate .PPT files first, then follow the instructions on the second slide to pull each 3D model slide into a new presentation.

Note: The Live 3D functionality in PowerPoint relies on ActiveX macros. Macintosh versions of PowerPoint do not support ActiveX.

MAX Script VRML Exporter

Use this exporter together with 3D Studio MAX to improve export of animation keyframe data, and to preserve smoothing groups!

Instructions

  1. Download this ZIP and unpack it to a folder. It's a good idea to mark the file read-only, so you do not accidentally change it.
  2. Move the file VRML97Export.ms into the \scripts\startup directory of 3DS MAX versions 5 or 6 (for instance, into C:\3dsmax5\scripts\startup), and restart 3DS MAX.
  3. To export the model, press Utilities and MAXScript buttons, select VRML97 Export item in the Utilities listbox and press VRML97 Export button.
  4. Follow the instructions in the prompts. The exporter includes some validation which looks for bad UV mapping coordinates, which can impede the ability of Live 3D to efficiently crop textures.

The exporter creates a vrml97 subdirectory in the same directory where the MAX model is stored. It puts the exported .WRL file, all textures used by that file, and some extra files with smoothing group data, into this directory. When you import the .WRL file into Live 3D, it will detect the presence of these extra files and use them automatically.
